What is Metallography?

Thursday, February 5, 2015

Metallography is the study of the physical structure of metals and alloys using methods such as microscopy and diffraction. This analysis method involves preparation of a test specimen by grinding, polishing and etching to reveal the true structure of the test specimen.

Metallography enables us to:
  • Characterize the structure, usually examining the grains, inclusions, defects, etc.
  • Gives us a process for analyzing and understanding the metal alloys
  •  A great tool for determining quality
Here at Miami Valley Materials Testing Center we offer a complete metallography lab with the latest technology. We can prepare metallographic samples of any variety including common steels, aluminums, castings, forgings, weldments and much more!
